About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Hi Sharon, You have a very professional attitude but you are supportive of your students by being approachable and accessible. This helps the students to see you as a dedicated instructor and this is from where respect is developed. Gary
Hi Sharon, Good point. Planning is the foundation from which good teaching comes. By being preparation you are able to relax and enjoy teaching even more because you know you can handle the content as well as the discussion of the subject that day. Gary
Hi Marc, You might want to do some reading in the area of memory development and cognitive processing. These two areas have a lot of information concerning how little adaptations can be made that will help the learner to grasp the information. I would also recommend that you do some reading in the area of learning disabilities and how to adapt materials to these learners. What you will find is that these strategies are effective for all learners and helps them to work within their learning preferences. Gary
Hi Michelle, You are right on target with your comment about needing to be clear with your explanations of the course requirements. By doing so you are going to greatly reduce your frustration later on when you are faced with students saying they don't understand what is required of them. Gary
Hi Marc, I think your strategies will be effective in creating a positive and supportive learning community. Since the students are together for such a long period of time the development of discussion skills for the students will be well work it. Gary
Hi Graham, Plus it helps to reduce the stress students feel as they start a new course. This helps to get the course off to a good start. Gary
Hi Kari, You are being an effective educator through your listening approach. This way you can customize to the needs of your students and earn their respect as well. Gary
Hi Michelle, Good job of finding what will work for you and your students in the lab situation. You are customizing to their needs without compromising your standards for the course. Gary
Hi Jan, You have an excellent professional development plan in place for yourself. You are hitting on a number of different parts of development that will help you to "grow" your skills as an educator. Gary
Hi Bruce, You are doing a great job of blending the interests of the students and your professional experience. They get to see you as a model of the field plus benefit from the experience you are sharing with them. Gary
