About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Hi Annie, I really like your approach to the new class. By getting them comfortable and settled in you are also developing a sense about how they prefer to learn. All of the builds to the point you know how to provide variety and support for their learning. Great job! Keep up the good work. Gary
Hi Stephen, Good job of reducing retention down to the simplest form. You are correct with your assessment of what retention should be about. Showing students the value of the education you are offering and how that education will help them create a future for themselves. Gary
Hi Jennifer, What a great way to "read" your students. You are adjusting your instructional delivery based upon current student needs. This is the sign of a true professional educator. Keep up the good work. Gary
Hi Jerry, Right you are. This is what application and relevancy is all about. You are getting them ready for the work world and they need to see the value of what they are learning in relation to that. Gary
Hi Blake, As you say pride and accomplishment are both very powerful motivators. By appealing to these you are helping your students to advance their personal career goals which will lead to a higher level of personal satisfaction. Gary
Hi Celia, Great to hear. I always like to hear such stories. I start all of my classes with an ice breaker because they do so much to get everyone settled in and comfortable just as you mentioned. I wish you much teaching success as you use all of the various strategies you can to be an instructional delivery expert. Gary
Hi Ronald, Great professional development plan for both yourself and your faculty. I know that I try to add something new or different each time I teach a course and that helps me to stay focused and have fun with the course. I am always curious to see how my new activity or project works. Keep up the good work. Gary
Hi Theresa, Great explanation of how an instructor can be supportive to and for their students. "Reading" students is a must so the instructor can make the adjustments necessary to keep everyone on target in terms of the learning process. Gary
Hi Amy, Good point. By being accountable instructors will also hold their students to a level of accountability. This will help the students to see how success can be theirs if they are willing to put forth the effort to acquire the needed skills and knowledge. Gary
Hi Sandra, This is a good student management plan. The theme I see with all of this is that you are "reading" the needs of the student and responding with the appropriate supports. Gary
