About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Hi Tammy, Way to go in adapting your instructional style to meet the needs of your respective classes. Thank you for sharing this example of how to handle such situations when they come up in our classes. Gary
Hi Vincent, Good to hear about how the 5 C's can be used to improve and expand instructional effectiveness. Keep up the good work. Gary
Hi Mary, Excellent way of expressing how you see your profession and your instructional obligations. By setting your standards high you are giving your students a model to which they can aspire. Soft skills (career skills) are essential for career success. If the students embrace the values of integrity, honesty and caring they will be successful in their career choice of nursing because these values will become ingrained into their daily lives. By dressing and communicating in a professional manner the students will see much progress in career advancement once they go to work. Gary
Hi Skip, What are some ways you go about getting students to feel comfortable and accepted into the class setting? Gary
Hi Brenda, They need these reminders off and on throughout the course so they don't lose their way in the process of studying as well as living their lives. All of these things can come together and cause them to become discouraged leading to poor performance. Gary
Hi James, Well stated. This is what professionalism is all about. Gary
Hi Marivic, Good point on how to bring balance to your instructional delivery. By offering content as needed with supporting input from students as they report on their projects the class gets content coming to them from a wide variety of sources. Gary
Hi Clare, I commend you for your setting out of clear expectations for your students. This reduces confusion and helps to keep the students focused on their career goals. Gary
Hi Jose, Good point about helping students retain course information. What are some strategies that you use to help your students with understanding the key points of a lecture or activity? Gary
Hi Douglas, You are right on with your comments about helping your students to stay current in their field by both content and skill development. If they aren't able stay current they aren't going to grow in their careers and this is a lesson we need to really drill into their minds. Gary
