Have You Achieved Your 2013 Goals?

It’s December, which typically means many employees are beginning to think of their end-of-year performance evaluations.  Are the goals you set at the beginning of the year on track for success?

Sometimes, we get so wrapped up in the craziness of our day-to-day tasks, that at some point in the year, our goals start to look more like burdensome “to-do list” items rather than meaningful objectives with personal significance we set out to achieve knowing they would benefit ourselves and consequently, the organization and the students we serve.  As you reflect on 2013, you might find that you accomplished all your goals, that you missed the mark on a few or perhaps you don’t even remember the goals you established – what can be done to improve moving forward?

One of the best managers I ever had in my career said that personal development is the most important factor in improving performance and advised that people take the time to “schedule an appointment with themselves.”  The fact is that we get so busy, we need time to decompress, reflect, and ensure we are on track.  Set goals that are truly meaningful to you and that will help you be the best you can be – then, schedule an appointment with yourself weekly and ask yourself a few questions:

  1. What progress have I made with my goals?
  2. What is going well?
  3. What needs improvement/adjustment?
  4. What can I do next week?
  5. What help do I need to make progress?

Your weekly appointments with yourself can help you identify where you can take action so you can succeed in achieving your goals.  This process can also help remind yourself of the motivation for establishing your goals in the first place, ensure your development journey is meaningful, and that you are intentional in your actions.
