This module was a valuable reminder to be more intentional when writing or responding to emails. In a distance coaching environment, applying these principles is especially critical for building rapport with students. Without the benefit of face-to-face interaction and nonverbal cues, coaches must be deliberate in demonstrating active listening and affirming students’ feelings so they feel supported and understood.
Because online communication can easily be misinterpreted, clarity and conciseness are essential. I particularly appreciated the Response Sequence section. When used effectively, this approach acknowledges individuals on multiple levels—presence, emotion, thought, and concern—helping them feel genuinely valued. In my experience, this type of communication allows individuals to move more quickly into a cooperative, solution-focused mindset. Without it, they may feel unseen and struggle to progress to the next stage of problem-solving.
