In previous generations, career planning and management was not as complex as it is today; a person got a job with a company, and generally stayed with the same company throughout their career - they only needed to work toward getting promotions and moving up within the company. In today's workplace, employees do not necessarily stay with the same company, and they can choose to navigate and direct their career in multiple directions. In order to plan their career path, the student needs to complete self assessment to determine what career they want to pursue, investigate the possible opportunities and talk to people who work in the field, prepare for their career by achieving the necessary education and skills, and commit to their chosen career. Once working in their chosen field they can proceed through the retention phase, and possible transition phase.
