In coaching we speak about seeing the client and seeing as the client. In adult education this means not only recognizing who the learner is, with their history, pressures, culture, and lived experience, but also stepping inside their frame of reference long enough to understand how the material looks and feels from their side of the screen. When we teach adults this way, learning shifts from information delivery to meaningful engagement, because we are responding to a real person rather than an abstract role called student.
