One of the key things I learned about competency-based education (CBE) is that it focuses on students demonstrating mastery of specific skills and competencies rather than simply completing a set amount of class time. This approach is especially effective in lab and shop environments because it aligns closely with the hands-on nature of technical and workforce education.
In a welding lab, for example, students must be able to safely operate equipment, read welding symbols, and consistently produce quality welds that meet industry standards. Competency-based education allows students to progress once they have demonstrated these skills, while providing additional practice and support for those who need more time to achieve mastery.
I intend to apply this approach by developing clear performance objectives, using industry-based rubrics, and providing students with regular feedback on their progress. I also want to incorporate more opportunities for students to assess their own work and identify areas for improvement. This will help create a learning environment where the focus is on skill development, safety, and job readiness rather than just completing assignments.
Overall, I believe competency-based education helps ensure students leave the program with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to be successful in the welding industry
