Sometimes its good to do just a kind of freeflow of writing to convey your thoughts. It helps clarify your thinking, provides an avenue for self expression, and conveys a message to the reader.
I think your summary of what works best for you is very telling about the kind of instructor you are. Your "learn-by-doing" comment is very important.
