Its interesting to me that as one that spends most of the time on the phone with students, you can hear different body languages in peoples voices.
I agree with your post. Also, you can usually pick up on their temperament. Some people can mask their temperament failry well or ascend it in favor of professionalism or just plain old friendliness. I do not manage direct reports, but this coaching course has helped me to rethink my approach to students and coworkers. I need to focus on behavior, results, possibilities and specifics.
