Hi Deby Sounds like some research on the benefits of an outside clinic, the pros and cons, and known challenges is in order. In case you need something to add to your list!! Best wishes Susan

HI Alison Sounds like a model plan to keep in touch with grads and develop employer relationships. Have you considered sending out the surveys at 2 and 4 months as well? Also follow up with phone calls? What kind of skip trace efforts do you put in place? Best wishes Susan
HI Debra As a small school you have a great advantage. You can organize operations right from the start while you have a small enrollment. Be sure to create job descriptions, policies and procedures for each department, forms to use, etc. Then as you add people they will know what has to be done to be effective. You may have the luxury of learning what works by some trial and error. You can focus on building a strong base to help ensure future development. Best wishes Susan
HI Debra Interesting situation. Seems that you can't offer internships because they require direct supervision by your staff. So perhaps that leaves out the concept. If you could develop off campus internships you would probably want the education department involved along with career services. Graduates could be motivated if the internship site provides unique experiences. Criteria are essential. It would be important to establish competencies to be completed and a rating scale. To avoid problems why not establish a full service clinic at your school? Best wishes Susan
HI Kelli Great idea to have a library filled with employment skills, job search, and life skills resources. We like the resrouces found in JIST publications - www.jist.com. Also in Career Communications, Inc. www.careerbookstore.com You can also find lots of employment skills and job search information on the Internet. Suggest you build a list of urls that relate to employment in your fields of study. Best wishes Susan
Wow Allison. Sounds like you have a formula for a very successful career services department. Can you share any more tips and details for the rest of us. What are your most effective presentations? What is the best use of your employers? Thanks Susan
HI Wanda Great idea to call upon folks in placement agencies to give presentations to your students. They often look for ways to market their companies. Hopefully they are smart enough to realize that the entry level students they meet today could be the hiring decision makers in the future. Best wishes Susan

Hi Deby Just another thought on Advisory committees. Once they meet a few times you can keep in contact with them via email meetings. Or phone conferences. Advisory board members are always so full of ideas. Why wait to get them together for a meeting. Best, Susan
Hi Wanda Great idea to offer a professional development course. It is important to develop a work mindset in students before they embark on the job search. Getting a job is more than writing a resume or learning how to fill out forms. There are also work ethic skills, learning how to stay on the job,how to advance, negotiate for a better position and salary, and more. Sounds like a great course. Best wishes Susan

Hi Debra Great that you are thinking about quarterly meetings with all personnel. An ideal way for everyone to learn what the other does, how the school works, and to brainstorm for new ideas. Really important for the accreditation process so that everyone understands the entire operation of the school. You might want to have everyone work together on a five year plan. Create a list of all school development areas. This includes programs, tuition, student services, physical plant, enrollment, and more. Ask everyone to think about what they think the school should look like in 5 years addressing each… >>>
