I've been teaching for almost 20 years. One thing that helped when I first started was being reminded by a mentor that regardless of being NEW at teaching, I knew MORE on the content than the students, :-).

Important to be mindful of our intent to be supportive to the student through "counsel" is OUT of our scope of practice. 

Also, it's important to know who the appropriate resources are at the institution.

I find this to be an "eye opener". Specifically, bringing increased awareness to the fact that not all disabled individuals have a "visible" disability; yet, it is important to remember they warrant the same consideration.

I found it interesting that a dog is considered to provide "service" to a someone with history of seizure, such as physical support; yet, a cat is NOT considered a "service" animal, even if it provides the individual with the "service" of emotional support.
