I do believe we will soon submit verbal social media responses in the online classroom. Social media and technology are changing rapidly. For example, with What's App, we can either text or talk to each other. This application is used by many individuals to communicate between boarders, such as the someone living in New York speaking or texting someone living in Argentina. Its free communication whereas in the past long distance charges would be collected for overseas calls. Many students struggle financially and would benefit by using What's App to communicate with their instructors, the school and classmates.

I really enjoyed reading your post and love the example of schoolwork. We cannot let up on schoolwork because it can get overwhelming just as anything we let up on. Everything is connected with our success such as time management, positive self talk and making the right choices. Our book states "Even with S.T.A.R. goals in place, at some point we all come up against things that threaten to derail us, whether it's a situation, person, event, our own fears, doubts, or even an immediate desire that conflicts with our long term plan for ourselves. How can we be sure to… >>>

This course is teaching me many tools that can be used to assist disabled students. It helps me understand all the obstacles a disabled student can face on a daily basis, depending on the disability.

One of my concerns is what is going on in our society that depression is so prevalent? What can be done about this epidemic?

Once we had a student suffering from seizure disorder attending a ground campus. The student suffered seizures on a weekly basis. Naturally, this disrupted the class for sometime until the medics arrived to attend to this student. Afterwards the class would resume. The time other students lost in class began adding up due to the weekly disruptions. What would you recommend for this type of situation in which too many disruptions are going on and students are not getting the lecture time they paid for? What responsibility does the Instructor have?

At times I go through classes with a large percentage of students who seem to be disengaged. Even though I call and leave messages many of them do not respond. They only participate in class by completing their work. I hold live labs each week yet almost never have a student show up, and if one does, it is always the same student. I love teaching, but as the saying goes.......the teacher appears when the student is ready.

Sharing new ideas is crucial to team work. I like to get a group of instructors togethter to share thoughts and brain storm new ideas for student success.

I believe grades should be posted within 48 hours. Like this we keep students active in class. I tool usualy complete grading by Tuesdays for those last minute students who turn in work at the last minute (Sunday 11:59PM). I grade assignments, tests and discussions througout the week, so I don't have a set day/s to grade. It is an ongoing item for me.

I've learned the importance of using scaffolds in my classroom. By using scaffolds I can help my students understand the concepts and apply their skills on tests. My students should be able to perform much better on tests when they understand the learning objectives presented each week.

I'll offer clarification on concepts in scaffolds.

I once had a student who worked on a boat in the northern waters. He was on the boat for several days at a time. I remember a typing assignment he had to complete and complained the boat moved so much it made that work very difficult. Understanding his situation I worked with him and allowed for another typing assignment submission. This student was alienated in a sense but worked through the situation and made decent grades.

If a student does not fully participate in Discussions it is hard to understand that student's learning style, though we said it would be dependent. I sometimes have students who do very well on exams but do not fully participate in Discussions, or if they do, their sentences are very short. Some students stick to themselves and are not very involved in talk, but this doesn't mean the student is struggling or dependent. In fact, some are at the top of the class. I find this also happens in a face-to-face class.
