I appreciate the heads up on common mistakes. We can pre plan to not make the same mistakes. We are human and will make enough mistakes. In teaching as in life, learning from our mistakes to avoid making the same ones over and over is paramount. In nursing, mistakes and near misses are scrutinized to avoid making the same or similar mistakes.

Many classes have the "expert" student. The suggestion of having the student explain a topic and then asking the student to explain the topic in words that everyone can understand is great.

I really like the idea of meeting with an unengaged student and asking them if they have suggestions for making class more interesting or effective.

 I found the reminder of how different high school mentality regarding assignments is from what must be required of college students considering the responsibilities they will face in practice.

My daughter is also a nurse. She often calls me on her way home to "debrief". As was shared in this section, I may not be able to do anything about the work stressors she faces, but she feels better from talking them out. She has a good husband that loves her but is not a nurse who has walked in nurse's shoes. Often listening is the best thing we can do.

I am caregiver for my brother who has cerebral palsy and is deaf and mute. I have the joy of caring for my 3 1/2 year old grandson when my daughter works night shift. Recently a manipulative friend has tried to make me her private nurse instead of taking responsibility for the things she can do for herself. From this lesson I am convicted that I need to communicate to my friend that I cannot be there all the times and situations she desires.

I understand the constant distractions that addressing each email as it comes in causes. I taught full-time at another university prior to starting in my adjunct faculty position. As a team player, if I only addressed emails at the example given of 3p.m., I would hamper planning of for example meetings by only addressing emails once a day. Often another faculty member will ask availability for members of a certain task force. Not responding until 3 p.m. or after (depending on the number of emails to address) would slow down ability to select a meeting time and secure meeting place.… >>>

I operate with to do lists regularly. That being said, I have not been listing complex things to do with a breakdown of the process as part of my to do list. I will experiment with this. One fear is that time that could be used to work on a task will be compromised by taking time for an ornate to do list.
