It is important to encourage discussion in a positive learning environment to promote confidence in the students and encourage those students that are more shy than others.  Give positive and honest feedback and carefully word any criticism  so as not to damage the dignity of the student.

It is important to be Present in the Class, get to know the students in the class and create a safe and interactive learning environment.  Encourage the students to create relationship bonds amongst themselves as well as with the instructor which will create a positive learning environment.

Being an online instructor includes more than just presenting content to the students.  I needs to be an ongoing "conversation" with the students to ensure they are learning the objectives of the class as well ensuring that the technical aspects of the course are being met with no problems.  It can be very frustrating to the student when their system is not working properly so the instructor needs to be able to mediate and get the student the help they require for successful completion of the course.

I liked the 5 C's:  Credible, Candid, Compassionate, Committed and Clear.

We have to be competent in what we are teaching and to deliver that information in a clear way for the students to understand.  Also realizing that students learn differently, so compassion is essential along with encouragement during their progress will keep things positive.
