I allow make up exams on the next to last day of the course. I give a comparable exam to the student that would not be compromised by others who have taken the original. I have seen in the past that students do help one another out but having the exam at the end reduces the likelyhood for cheating.
Setting rules and policies at the beginning gives the students your expectations of them. You set the enviornment by doing this which the students will respect. Being fair and impartial will lead to success of the students learning. They will not have to worry about the instructors abilities to control the classroom and can concentrate on the curriculum.
I too challenge the students to bring their passions into the class and route it in my daily plans. When they have a topic that is relevant I have them orderly detail the subject then present it to the rest of the class.I tend to find myself thinking quite differently than the students and this information lets me observe their thoughts on important topics. I learn from this and adjust myself to keep their interest. This makes the students happy and want to participate more. Win Win situation!
I think that showing the students the curriculum will be fun to learn makes them open up to receiving the material easier. I let my students know that I am firm and enjoyable at the same time.I allow students to participate far greater than what they are used to in other past settings. This really motivates them.

Instructors need to relax and present themselves as they would in their past enviornmets. Confidence will extend to the students and they will feed off it from the start. An instructor that takes a personal inventory every night before the next class can self examine how the day went and make preparations for the next days activities. I find that addressing the students with respect they intuitively are repectful back.Doing this allows the student to be lees apprehensive in the class. This all leads to great success overall for the student as well as the instructor.

I usually catch the student in a one on one setting and ask if anything is bother that student. the student will open up most times at thtat point and unload. I find that tlking to the student one on one helps with their trusting me as well as my genuine concern for that students success. This practice usually has the student refocusing on their problem and that leads them to being more attentative in class and projects. The student will usually come by and thank me for listening to them.
