Activity

I learned the importance of a documented lesson plan and how it is useful for my lessons and other faculty members. I will use a lesson plan to help me stay on track and to ensure that I am meeting the objective for the lesson.

I learned that it is important to be prepared and that you should get to know the background of your students.

I learned to break down the lecture into manageable content, 10-15 minutes sections. Giving time for discussion to ensure that the message was received. Being prepared is very important, showing up early to ensure that demonstrations are effective.

On the first day, I will take the time to make sure I know everyone's name and try to apply how their past experiences will make them successful in the course and in their careers.  I’ll motivate students by showing how course content connects to welding and inspection careers. I’ll explain fair grading and emphasize that success is achievable with effort.

The syllabus sets the course structure, clarifies expectations and shows professionalism. It guides the students to the essentials and provides a positive learning enviroment.

In this module I learned about the roles of the instructor; that you are a model and present the standard for your profession, that we are managers and we provide a safe and supportive environment that presents in an organized and clear manner. Finally, you are a motivator.

Both types of motivation are important as they should align with program. The objective in the classroom would be to make the learning environment intrinsically motivational, especially when a student has just begun their education.

As an adult learner myself I recognized the importance of autonomy to the learning process. The ability to choose the direction of the learning process by providing some variety of activities should increase engagement. Whereas providing security to the student assists in their ability to perform the task which builds confidence in the process. I like the idea of practice exams. I had a class once where the instructor gave us the final exam example on the first day of the class, it was like a baseline and as the class progressed there would be practice exams, on the specific… >>>

I learned so many things in this course, but it seemed that the main point was the expertise, excitement, confidence, and the enthusiasm of the instructor. I was reminded of team sports, where the coach is more than just a technician. All of the best game plans and practice are moot if the team is not motivated. The instructor like the coach is motivational to the students, their success is his success. My main plan of action is to be approachable, build rapport, and provide relevancy of the materials to the students.

The most important thing I took from this lesson was the power of relatability and the importance of relevancy. I will definitely use mnemonic devices, to help with the difficult and essential steps to some processes. The little tricks and memory hacks build the students' confidence level and success breeds motivation.
