In my English classes, I often start classes by having students writing in a journal. It is good to get them writing while I do attendance, etc. - Sometimes they will share what they wrote. Often even when not asked to share, they will talk about what they are writing or the prompt, etc. - so it engages them in the topic.

I have found it interesting how students do with technology. A great idea is when you have a mix of generations is to get students to share what they are good at and where they need improvement. The net generation can help others with using technology and becoming comfortable with technology and the others teach the net generation a thing or two about 'soft skills'.
I believe that it is always important to work on improving your classroom management style. No matter how long you have been teaching, you want to change things, stay fresh and be able to adjust your style for a particular group or classroom. It was good being refreshed on classroom management styles here.

It does seem that cell phone use is one of the biggest issues in the classroom these days. I know that I do make it a point to address cellphone use and ask students to put them away, turn them off, etc. - If students use them, I remind them - but it seem like I become known more for cell phone policy than other things - such as what I am teaching, etc. It is frustrating and I have not found a way to deal with it. I have never taken a phone away but when students ignore the… >>>

It does seem that there are more than thse four styles or combination of thse four styles. And it also seems that a teacher who leans towards a certain style (buddy - for example) might be very effective in certain types of classrooms (more hands-on, etc.) and the controller more effective in certain classrooms, etc.
