About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Mike, Yes, it is. It gets the students excited about the upcoming course and what they are going to learn. This lays the foundation for the development of respect. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Veronica, Well said. Positive first impressions set the stage for success. It is a building process from there on, rather than a correction effort by the instructor to win the students back. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Veronica, Two things need to be in place to help students to see the value of course content. Relevance and application. Your approach is giving them both of these items. This method increases the ROI of the course to them as well. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Lee, Like your "6 times 3 different ways" rule. I know my students need to have it presented to them this way because they don't get it the first time through. The more we can reinforce due dates and requirements the more disciplined they will be as they develop in their field. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Vida, Your approach gives them a standard to work toward that is based upon real world demands. The more they understand this and acquire the discipline to be on time and prepared the easier their transition is going to be into the work place. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
William, You have both a major challenge and responsibility. The challenge is the planning implementation of a positive first impression while also making sure all of the essential information is covered. Sounds like you have a clear strategy for making it happen. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Anna-Maria, Trust establishes the basis for the development of respect. Respect then leads to the development of rapport which creates a professional atmosphere. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
David, Good points about learning environments and how to make them work for you. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Sherri, Good examples of how a student can be moved off course when the stakes are high, like when taking a test. Thanks for sharing these with us. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Dawn, How do you make it so in your classroom? Thanks for sharing with us. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
