Noted the ice breaker exercise mentioned, using the matching answer test using industry tools will work well for the HVAC classes.

By going through the syllabus in detail the first day you give the students a clear picture of what they can expect from the course as well as from you as the instructor.  Set clear deadlines to stick to and display them in a calendar using reminders as the dates approaches.

Plan ahead and decide what you are most interested in testing for in order to apply the correct testing format.

In order to give students more tools to be successful in carrier growth we should evaluate their level of critical thinking and problem solving in order to adjust the teaching technique and reach those students that my not see the importance in soft skills.

Asking questions seem to be an art, you have to decide what the purpose of your question is, if is to gauge student understanding you can ask open ended questions or if to drive home a specific point you should ask close end question. Always prepare and come up with your question before hand so that the responses will have the desire effect.

Always try to incorporate more than one teaching styles at any given moment. When lecturing for example, use power point illustrations with images, graphs and illustrations that will cover both visual and auditory learners.

Make key notes to trigger your memory and make sure you cover what you intended when lecturing.  Keep lectures between 15 - 20 minutes long and then switch to demonstrations.  When conducting the labs make rounds to each group or individual performing the labs to make sure that everyone is using safety methods including PPE and make sure to give complements and mini demonstration as you go if needed.

For your first impression on the students the first day you may want to stablish a connection using your field experience. You may want to get some insights from each student to have a better idea of each student's level of interest in the subject and start building motivation by giving clear directions and expectations for the student as well as a clear understanding of your role as a instructor, mentor and facilitator.

By being very well prepared for class start you give yourself more time to notice each student and greet them correctly as they enter class. Will also show that you have the control of the room needed to be successful.

To be a model to follow by the students.  Always use proper professional language when addressing everyone (making it a habit). By dressing accordingly and acting the part (HVAC technician at the highest professional level) you could gain respect and admiration from your students.
