Communication is very important in an online environment. Meeting with students synchronously is effective for answering questions that several students may have. Another effective technique is to have online office hours where you can chat with students individually or use software that allows the use of Web cameras so that you can see and talk with students individually. When you have online office hours, students can come to you virtually. These are excellent venues for students to come to the instructor with questions.

Remember, however, that not all communication is verbal. Written communication is also essential. Therefore, your syllabus must be comprehensive, yet concise. I have found it beneficial to put headings in the syllabus (such as "Books") in question form such as "What books do I need for this class?" I also include the heading question "Should I procrastinated in this class?" Obviously the answer is "NO!" but it helps emphasize the importance of not procrastinating.

Communicate as effectively as you can in a variety of ways in the online environment.
