There are many ways during which feminist philosophy of incapacity and incapacity studies can benefit from thinking
negatively. In a single exploration of the ways by which a specific difference-namely, disability-is essential, Garland-Thomson (2011, 604) theorizes
disabled folks as "misfits" inside a society of equivalence, noting that "misfitting can yield modern perspectives." She argues: "When we match harmoniously and properly into the world, we overlook the truth of contingency as a result of the world sustains us. When we expertise misfitting and acknowledge that disjuncture for its political potential, we expose the relational part and the fragility of fitting" (597).
The difference of disability as misfit opens up political prospects through confronting what suits with that which does not.
It's in this antagonistic misfit that the nonidentity of disability is uncovered.
