I think self awareness is key to implementing cultural competency.  Cultural competency gives you the tools to consider alternate perspectives than your own inherent biases.

Learning preference helps increase engagement when instruction is tailored towards those mediums preferred by the instructor's audience. 

Language is a reflection of culture and that is why it is so integral to the teaching environment. What you say and the language you use affects the classroom culture.

Culture vs Race is a false dichotomy that can create division in perception when addressing the needs of a student. An awareness of both culture and race allows teachers to be cognizant of their audience. But it is not a culture versus race argument but a culture AND race awareness.

interaction amongst different audiences calls for different things. A teacher needs to tailor their pedagogical practice to suit the correct audience.
