Retention

How long do you think orientation should be? 1 hour?

It is best to keep it to about 1 hour. if you feel the need to go over, you may need to incorporate beverages and snacks.

It is also very important for the Admissions Reps to prepare their candidates for the 1-1.5 hour long session. They need to inform their candidates anout the importance of the session and the estimated length of time to devote(block out) to this session. I have asked the Reps to let the candidates know they need to schedule to be at the orientation for at least 2 hours.

Students will become restless during orientation, so you need to reiterate the reason for discussing the policies and procedures during While keeping it entertaining.

When the session ends a little sooner than the allotted time, you can celebrate this accomplishment with them by mentioning that we made good time as they were such as great group. Motivating them from the very first interaction with the academic side of the house. Ensure that you collect a 5-question survey to determine if there are any challenges such as child-care, fare for the commute or an upcoming planned vacation. Ask those who have additional questions to stay back and give them something to remember you by like a chant/mantra or simultaneous response that they can all shout back to maintain that great energy.

Good luck during your next orientation!
