I play a game of Textile jeopardy with my class just before mid-term and the again before finals. All the students get really into it and every single time I have had great success with that. It helps student remember all the stuff we have done previously. They also like it that I devote an entire class period for preperation for the test. After jeopardy I give them trial swatches to practice and guide them through how to write the the answers. It is surprising that the students nay know the answer but need to be guided as to how… >>>

Each class needs to be planned and exercised in a logical and clear way. I usually have handouts and in-class assignmnets each class. I make it a point to have them printed and ready for distribution before each class. I also show videos and I make it point to have tvs or flashdrives etc. all organized before the class begins.
I think a little bit of planning goes a long way to show students how to be professional and that we care about their time and success.

I like to start my first class with details of what I expect of them. This makes it clear in their minds how to respond to my directions during the course.
I also give them an exercise where they work together to find solution to a simple problem but in a group. This enables them to know their classmates better.
They then have to present their group findings and work for the presentation as a group as well.

I agree all the way. It is extremly rude to ignore a student who is wanting to participate. No matter how not so enlightened the student's comment may be. The students are there to interact and not just be preached to.
I do the same and tell them to hold on and always go back to them when I am finished with my thought. The students deserve our respect as we do from them.

Like the last session, I liked the video clip. I think a short silence in class is good thing. I didn't think so before but I have through experience learned that students need time to digest the information and few pauses are healthy for them to be then ready for the next topic. They also respond and regain more information this way.

I really enjoyed the video clip. And yes there are students that like to raise hand and ask questions and comment. I have found that these students are usually very smart and eagar to get involved and gain most from the class content. Although they do slow you down and the class and keeps bring you back the topics you have covered already. Sometimes I feel that the class gains from it as we get to discuss previously covered topics and referesh everyone's memory. I agree , Nancy gave me the idea all the way back two years ago and I have been using it ever since. It never fails to excite the students and get them all geared up.

I try and be positive in class about isssues or topics that students bring up. It always help them see the positive in their problems and focus on solving them rather than dwelling in why me kind of scenarios.
They move on soon and feel better atleast for awhile and focus better on the project at hand and how to move forward rather than being confused and frustrated.

I tried the debriefing of a field trip we have taken after I did this part of the module. It worked out really well and students point of view was much different from what I had expected. Overall it was a fruitful experience. I am going to continue to do that in the future.

I like the idea of using music. I am going to try it while the students are working on their own doing lab work. Sounds fun. Students are young and very attracted to music in general I think.
