A student's ability to begin picturing themself in their new role post graduation is a critical retention and completion tool. Life after graduation may be a source of anxiety unless students have confidence in the Career Services Department.  Is it successful in preparing students for, and connecting student to, entry level opportunities after program completion? Early and frequent intervention is essential to improving retention among struggling students. Bonding with classmates as they face their fears together, and succeed, will create lasting bonds and increase their willingness to persist onward, together. Our Registrars make every effort to keep cohorts and study groups together, class by class, whenever it is possible for this very reason. Inviting students to assist in the planning of their graduation ceremony is a great integration tool as well. A detailed to-do checklist can assist with making the transition into a successful student. Most students underestimate the amount of changes attending school will bring to their personal and professional lives, including their closest relationships. Managing this transition proactively greatly increases student retention. Carving out dedicated time for class and studying is critical as is having multiple back up plans for hiccups in childcare or transportation that may interrupt class attendance. Official and unofficial mentorship programs can both help students find a lifeline when navigating challenges.

A checklist and/or questionnaire helps Admissions customize the interview process and allows the candidate to decide whether their program of interest is a true lifestyle and career fit from the outset. I absolutely agree that retention begins in Admissions. When the program of interest is the right one a prospective student's interest and commitment will grow as they learn and experience more about their new profession. When we begin with the end in mind, specifically graduation and employment, students remain more resilient throughout the inevitable ups and downs of their academic program.
