I believe there should be full disclosure to a student and expectations well covered during recruitment. I teach mainly adult students. I sometimes get the feeling from some of these students that because they are adults, they right away “deserve†to pass without working at it. No matter how many times I stress at the beginning of a class that you get the grade you deserve, it seems that some students think that I’m just saying this as a formality, and give me much grief when they receive a lower grade then they thought they deserved. I am simply an instructor, but many of my students come to me with various questions about financial aid, recruitment of a friend to the school, and general compliance related questions. Fortunately for me, I work for a school that has a great support staff, and there is always someone I can point the student to so they can get the correct information. It is so true not to give a student wrong information, and instead tell them that you'll find and answer (or person to answer it for them).

I am a rather new instructor. No matter how much I review my material, I don't feel like I am prepared for class. The buggest fear I have is getting up in front of the class, and they think that "this guy doesn't know what he's talking about." Any advice??

I usually get this out first day of class. I tell students that I like to run a mostly informal class and I encourage a free spirited learning enviroment. BUT, I tell them if I catch them cheating, they will fail. I tell them that if they cheat in here (the classroom) the will cheat out there (in the world),and the last thing we need in the world are more cheaters. This usually works and I have no problems.

I have a couple students who I just can not read. They look at me with that blank stare. They insist that they undertand what was just lectured but I have a feeling that they dont. Any ideas on how to address this?

I teach mainly adult learners. I get a majority of students turning in their assignments late and use the excuse that it's because of work. Any suggestions on what is the best way to handle this?

I currently teach a 4 1/2 hour class on Monday nights. I try to mix the class up with lectures, videos, breaks and discussion; but I still begin to lose most students after 3 hours. Any advice??

I have found that introductions, professional experience and shared interests are great for building a rapport between the students and I and benefits the entire class overall.

I found that letting the class know that the syllabus is flexible and can be tweeked as the class progresses, is a great way to reduce the stress for a student as the class begins.

Hello, I'm totally new to teaching and just started my first class. I was asked to instruct after coming in as a guest speaker and afterwards the instructor asked me if I wanted a job :) I teach a class of almost all adult students. One thing I notice is that most of them expect a passing grade up front and expect to put just enough effort into the work because they feel they must. I dont know if it's because they are adults and feel that "School work" is more for young students? How can I convey the importance… >>>
