As a new instructor, one of the challenges that I am faced with is how to keep student's attention and motivation during classtime. Student's will be preoccupied with their cell phones or up/down and in/out of the classroom during lecture time. Some students will distract the lecture by diversional outbursts, hoping to get a class response and disrupt the lecuturer.
After completing one of the maxknowlege courses, it appeared to me that two types of motivators exist: Intrinsic and Extrinsic. Both can be helpful when preparing weekly lesson plans. For example, emphasizing relevance to the topic at hand would be an extrinsic motivator… >>>
Detachment! Yes, families will sabotage your efforts to wanting personal growth in your life. Sometimes, if communication is unsuccessful in getting the support you need by your immediate family, then detachment is Healthy.

Yes Marsha, it is totally difficult at times to reach all students in the short periods of our terms. When I first introduce myself to the students at the beginning of each term, I express to them the resources we have for them to seek out and utilize on their own time schedules beyond our short class periods with them. Further, I use different types of Teaching Styles with the indent to reach All Types of Learners. For example, visual, verbal, written and overhead. Class Projects for credit points help as well. Yes Marsha, some students may not be cognitively age competent for their age. Once you assess how each student best learns, then you can adapt your teaching style/s to them. Not easy, very time consuming, however you can watch the growth of each student at his/her own learning curve. Amazingly in the end, we all end up in the same place. :)
I Love it when I can See the Fruits of their Successes. It is what reassures me that the seed has been planted and they are finding the water to help it grow. Empowerment.
Thanks David for the Reminder. They are Adult Learners just like the Rest of Us. I have forgetten what demands I must of had on my Professors. Patience and then more Patience to assist in their learning process.
Any suggestions?? Totally open to creative thoughts. I tend to learn from Creative Minds, and implement others creative ways by action. Energy is what I do have.

Nuggets? I could use some helpful nuggets Darryl, if you please. What techniques have you used in your classroom to retain students? What I have tried is notifying students early, when I see them struggling in a subject or skill. When they do not use the tools recommended to them, is there another nugget I could try? It seemed that when students realized, later than ealier that they were not passing the class, it was too late for them to pull up their grade to pass the class. Any suggestions is welcomed.
