My name is Steven, nice to "meet" you :) I have been an academic counselor for about six years and have worked exclusively with distance education students. You raise several common issues that are often challenging to overcome. The lack of attendance that you mention can be problematic. In my experience, new student orientation needs to be championed by all student services personnel, but especially admissions staff if it has any hope of being successful.
