About me

I LOVE Classical Ballet.  My Mother started my sister & me in ballet classes at young ages.  I danced professionally with LA Ballet Society until age 19 when I realized I needed a formal education.  Fast forward...a dental assistant until I realized it was a "dead end" job.  Then to Nursing School, no accelerated courses at that time, so started with a community college (Mt. SAC) to get my ADN, then to CSUF to obtain my BSN, then later to University of Phoenix to obtain my MSN.  My workplace experience landed me a position at UCIMC.  The best decision of my life!  A 411 Bed Level I Trauma Center, a Burn Center, a Teaching & Research Hospital, one of the nations Top 10 academic medical centers, a Certified Stroke Center & a Magnet Hospital to name a few.  I floated to all FIVE Intensive Care Units, the ED, & PACU!  I participated on the Critical Care Council.  An amazing experience.

Now retired off the bedside I am teaching LVN students with American Career College.

My interests & hobbies to keep a balanced life; first is sailboat racing!  I am part of the crew on a J112e, a beautiful, fast new sailboat in 2024.  I grow Plumerias. On one of my several visits to Maui I fell in love with Plumerias, the vast colors, the fragrance, and the ease of growing got me hooked!  I also have two "best friends"  my doggies, Jackson & Tango.

Activity

I did have a student in my last class who said she was "dyslexic"...but at the end of the class.  I often wondered how she could be so attentive in class & do so poorly on the exams & quizzes.

I now know if I see this behavior again I will ask about disabilities.  I think a student should notify the instructor that there is a learning ability at the beginning of the new term.  This way accomodations can be made at the start of the term, not the end.

ELL students as well as the entire class. Medical terminology is a big part of this career path.  I plan to introduce new terminology with handouts, definitions, examples, as I slowly enunciate the words.

With a class of 50 to 60 students I have not used learning groups.  I will attempt to use learning groups for this coming term.  I will use the "formal learning group" & have students say numbers between 1 & 7 in their seating arrangement that will correspond to the group they will be in.  Since these are LPN students I will come up with a master plan to use for the entire term.

I am surprised of the short attention spans (12-15 minutes) & memory times of humans.  Students can remember only 2-3 points in 30 minutes.  Students can remember better if there is a vivid example given.

I plan to pause & speak slower. I tend to speak too fast & do not pause long enough.  I also plan to develop my storytelling skills.

Chat GPT can help me develop review questions, help me foster critical thinking with patient scenarios, have students write a Reflective learning journal after each class day.

So many Educational uses.  I particularly learned about the Khan Acaademy. free. I plan to check this site.

Misuses: Number 1.  plagiarism. Educators need to discuss this issue with students & how to document when using somebody else's research.

I learned almost everything about Chat GPT!  I understand how it works, what it can be used for, its limitations.

Type in Mayo Clinic with the subject you are interested in.  Very thorough information.

I learned the positive life changing impact Open AI has is to improve communication & content creation to advance healthcare & education.

The drawback: Lack of Emotional Intelligence & empathy that will lead to inappropriate/ insensitive responses.

Remembering student names!  I will have @ 60 students!  I plan to use name cards to sit on their desks & information cards to help remember students.  I like the fact that I am the "Standard for the field". On the first day of class I will give a short "bio" of my qualifications & expertise, and know that I have the expertise & knowledge base that students do not have.
