Which tools in particular do you find most helpful? In particular, what is your take on Screencast-O-Matic?

Amazing how young adults and kids today pick up on new technological concepts and ideas so quickly. Therefore, I am finding staying abreast on what technologies are emerging, how best to use them, if they are applicable, if they are accessible and if they will be well received a full-time job for an online instructor. Any suggestions?

Amazing how young adults and kids today pick up on new technological concepts and ideas so quickly. However, many young students we teach are not as savvy. Many who did not have ready access to computers often find they understand little more than surfing the web and sending a simply email without attachments. Therefore, when I encounter students in the classroom I am quick not to assume anything. I ask if they understand or know how to achieve certain tasks. Some think they know more than they do? Many students who do not post on time feel that their participation on the board really does not matter to overall discussions. What matters is they eventually post and receive credit. At some schools, I am capable of enforcing a no-tolerance rule where late posts are not accepted despite circumstances. However, in all fairness, at these schools posts are worth as little as 10 points as opposed to 50, 60 and 120. Trying to movtivate a student who does not engage is difficult but doable. What I find most useful is figuring out what makes the student a student. Finding out why a student is attending school and using that information to keep students motivated is usually helpful in getting students refocused on their overall goals, which includes succeeding in school.

Another technology tool that I find easy to use and keeps a log of your previous recordings is Screen-O-Matic at http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/. I use it as a means of motivating students and clarifying select and key points when necessary. I find weekly encouragements using video to be more personal and better received. I prefer Screen-O-Cast to Jing because it is super simple. There is nothing to download, the tool captures whatever is shown on your screen and verbals captured through the computer's mic, you can create video that allows for student comments, and password protect content.
