I think this gives a good contrast between the what can motive groups of people. I feel like intrinsic motivation is the more important of the two. 

I think one of the things that tends to make teaching adults easier than some other age groups is the fact of their motivation to be there, hunger to learn and desire for success. While this isn't always the case, by and large this is usually the mindset they come in with. 

i think (at least in teaching the trades) one of the best ways to find some common ground with students is to show them some small "tricks" for making jobs both better quality and more efficient. 

I think building a good reporte with your students establishes a difference between simply teaching a person how to do something and helping a student succeed in their chosen field. 

This training in my opinion shows how even seemingly small details can make a huge difference in the leaning process and environment for some students. This in some ways is also a metaphore for life in general, what is a seemingly small event in one person's day can be a huge event for someone else. 

The best ways to get students engaged in a course or class is to appeal to whatever motivates them. This is usually one of the following things: pride, knowledge, self improvement, or the prospect of gainful employment. If you are able to appeal to one of those it will make a student getting engaged in a course or class much easier and improve the learning environment.
