From this module, I learned that student empowerment grows when learners feel heard, respected, and included in the learning process. I plan to apply this by building rapport, offering choices when possible, encouraging student voice, and creating a supportive environment that helps students feel confident, capable, and accountable for their own learning.

From this module, I learned that students need to see the value in what they are learning, not just view it as a requirement for a degree or job. I plan to apply this by sharing my own experiences each course—how exposure to new ideas and concepts has increased my desire to keep learning. I see myself as a lifelong learner, and I want students to understand that knowledge is power and something to be proud of, because it’s something no one can take away.

From this module, I learned the difference between intrinsic motivation (finding meaning and enjoyment in learning) and extrinsic motivation (working for rewards or outcomes). I plan to apply this by helping students change their perception of the course—showing that everything we do is meaningful and that the true rewards come from within, such as confidence, knowledge, and personal growth, while still using clear expectations and incentives to keep them motivated.

I learned that people do best when they feel both safe and able to make their own choices. Security gives protection and structure, while Autonomy allows independence. When these two are balanced, individuals feel supported and confident to act on their own.

This module reinforces my belief that I am human and capable of making mistakes. While I always strive to be fully prepared, I recognize that unexpected challenges can occur. As a new instructor, it has taken me a few terms to develop a comfortable rhythm and teaching flow. However, the mistakes I’ve made along the way have been some of my greatest learning opportunities, and they directly support my growth in applying effective instructional techniques.

This module helped me understand that adult learners require many of the same teaching techniques used with younger learners, but they also need greater patience, tolerance, and understanding from the instructor.

I will take the time to engage all students equally, and for those who are less responsive, I will apply different instructional approaches to encourage participation. If those strategies are not effective, I will make time to meet with the student individually to find the best ways to support their learning.

Moving forward, I will ensure that I clearly discuss classroom expectations with students and provide opportunities for feedback. This will help each student understand what is expected of them and also clarify what they can expect from me as their instructor.
