I know not everyone would want to act out things in class, as I would not. However, this is something I plan to try--put topics/terms on index cards and put them in a box. One student draws one out of the box, and can act it out, can draw on the board, can describe it verbally, anything BUT use the term itself to try to get the class to guess what it is. This activity I think would be most appropriate for my class. I give out bone pens or syringe pens at the end of my class, just for being able to make it the entire course, and I could use them throughout the course as prizes for the winners, then give out the rest at the end of the course.

The point made in this module about adult students being tired in class really hit home. Some of my students have multiple kids, they may have full-time jobs, or part-time jobs, and a host of other things outside of class. My class is from 8:00 - 9:50 p.m. I work full-time in additino to teaching, and I recently had a guest speaker. I was able to sit in the classroom, and although my speaker was interesting and fun, I still had a hard time staying awake after putting in a full day at work. I really want to start using… >>>

I won't disclose the course I teach, but it is basically like learning a new language, that lends itself more to a lecture-type format. I learned the material initially by taking an hour each day and writing out each term I recalled, spelling it correctly, and noting what it meant. I did this without looking at notes or books; it really helped me to remember it, and I pass this along to students to try. I do, however, need to incorporate more learning formats. I am considering adding a short (5 min.) individual presentation on certain topics for each student… >>>

I was glad to see this suggested, as I had considered doing this for the next semester. I did not teach the first half of the course for some of the students I will have, so I do not know what they know coming in. It will not be graded, and it will give me an idea of not only where those students are, but what the students I did have previously remember.

For me, preparation is key. I like to see the classroom where I will be teaching ahead of time. This allows me to visualize myself teaching in front of students in that exact setting. Knowing the number of students I will have ahead of time helps with this. It also allows me to see what resources are available, like a board and markers, overhead, power point, anatomical models, etc. I also want the book the students will be using as soon as possible, syllabus, and any other materials so I can begin making my own class notes.

Motivation is huge with me. I also work as a personal trainer, and in a physical therapy clinic, and have found that different people are motivated in different ways by different things. However, one thing that I have found works best with almost everyone is positive reinforcement. If an "A" student happens to do poorly on a quiz, I remind them that quizzes do not count as much toward their final grade, so it will not affect it as much, and that there will be other opportunities to make up for it.
