I have found that using real-life examples is an integral part of a class discussion or lecture. I not only provide my own real-life examples to help facilitate the learning, but I encourage students to add to the lecture or discussion by providing their own real-life examples, especially if they are work-related in the field we are studying. I have found that small group discussions or group debates in the classroom tend to keep all types of students "awake" and motivated. I typically will have at least one small group discussion included in each of my class periods. I believe that the first week of the course is the most important week of the session/quarter. It definitely sets the tone of the course. (I remember back when I was a college student and would form opinions of a course during the first class meeting). It is sometimes hard to change those opinions once they are formed!
