Others have already pointed this out, the use of rubrics is most useful with respect to grading. Students can see the minimum criteria, and many choose to meet only the bare minimum and I will point out the need to participate more in the class, and some choose to meet the minimum requirements and earn a “C†for the class.

What seems to happen is the older students have the ability to exercise judgment, offer moderation, a reasonable assessment of fact patterns, the younger students may lack the ability to make close calls and are at times unwilling to change their viewpoints as new information is presented to them.

Establishing a pattern of communication, the two most important things to consider and why:
1. Do you send messages that can be clearly understood, eliminate any need to interpret the message that may vary across the intended audience? The idea is to establish consistency.
2. Are you using the maximum efficiency to reach the intended audience? You want to make sure everyone that is impacted by your message is notified.

The three most important considerations are (in my opinion): 1) Are the tools used user friendly, can someone with a high school degree understand how to use the technology with a minimum degree of effort or within a couple of hours training? 2) Can older students who may be retooling their job skills make use of the technology with minimum assistance to mitigate any hesitancy with respect to being part of an online class? 3) Have I had the necessary training to make use of the up-to-date requirements/technology that is a fundamental part of the course and is expected to… >>>

My perspective of class threads (discussions) is to ensure the student has addressed the main topic, and then begin to challenge what they think they know or their opinions. I give them additional information to consider, see if they are willing to change their minds or stick to your views. If they choose to maintain their viewpoints, I try again, altering the facts slightly to se if the student is now willing to change their minds when a reasonable person would make adjustments in their viewpoints.

When developing meaningful feedback for assignments/projects integrated into you’re my online course, the three most important things to remember? 1. The feedback should be addressing the rubric, what is intended to be learned in an assignment or task; 2. The feedback needs to be offered in a positive manner, encouraging students to learn from their mistakes and offer suggestions, illustrate how the performance can be improved; and 3. In teaching on-line my three biggest considerations will be:
1) Establishing the minimum standards for participation in discussions.
2) Encouraging students to participate, check back in at a later date and read other comments, even if they do not respond.
3) Encourage students to realize they can disagree with others, if you do then document the disagreement with sources that support your arguments, removing the mere opinion in a discussion or personal attacks.

For me, the three most important things to consider are: 1. Knowing the subject matter that is within your field of study. For example you may have a degree in criminal justice but lack the skills to teach in the legal courses, or you are an attorney but do not have the applied experience to teach classes on law enforcement, or corrections. 2. The student that is noisy can be handled by having them stay busy. If they provide a response to a discussion board assignment, I will ask additional questions and request they document their responses. Usually if they do not will repeat the response, and as they research and document their answers I may change the facts and ask additional questions and request the student to support the follow up response with scholarly sources.

What should be done in my view is to engage the student by asking questions. How did they arrive at a specific solution, did they think about other possibilities. The idea is to have them think for themsleves and defend reasoned responses.
