Hi Gewndolyn,

I would have to agree with you on this subject.  Students come and go quickly in this type of college setting.  The only way I continue to have contact with students is to provide guidance or other services in order to aid and assist in their future careers.  Some colleges have a great alumni support and others it is non-existent.

The biggest issue I have seen in the past with this learning platform, is at times the communications between students and instructor is lacking. Also the communications between students may not be as clear as in the traditional ground class.
The biggest issue with an on-line format is noticing when students have issues participating in the group format (discussion boards or chat rooms). Once that is observed, then it can be addressed in order to promote a positive experience to all of the students in the class.
With an on-line class you need to express yourself in such a way that the students come across with a positive feeling that the instructor has the knowledge to teach the course. Giving personal references to incidents that have occurred in the past shows your interest and background.
Discussion Comment
It is imperative that the on-line usage work properly otherwise the on-line student easily gets frustrated. They get turned off on the course and the material presented.

With regards to current tools to better explain the content in the online format, I believe that this is only a part of the overall expirence.  The interaction should be the primary factor when completing these class formats.  The student will get more across if it is a whole package approach to the class topic at hand.

Discussion Comment
When using technology tools, the instructor needs to throughly evaluate the use of the tool. Most times the tool can be just a filler, and not effectively used for the topic at hand. The tool needs to have a purpose for the topic and the class in general. Any thoughts?

This was a good review for a new instructor as to the proper do's and don't in setting up an online class.
