I just started a new class I am having a very hard time getting them to speak up or give me any feedback. When I ask them if they have questions they never do. When I ask them questions no one volunteers. Any advice?

You should always be upfront and truthful with your superiors. First, your boss doesn't like surprises, they always want to know whats going on. Second, being dishonest will cause the boss to lose trust in you and most likely lose your job, or put you in a situation where it is much easier to lose your job. Third, if your boss knows they can trust you they will rely on you more, causing you to be promoted sooner.

Make sure someone is assigned as a scribe. This allows all involved to think freely, as they are assured the scribe is writing down all the key points of their new ideas.
