I think my biggest takeaway are going to be the reading other body language as I feel it is such an essential part of listening.

Use level 2 and 3 listening to show my full attention is being giving and avoid common bad listening behaviors I identified that I have. 

I've learned the 5 principles of communication. How I plan on applying the lessons I learned firstly would be avoiding "Why" question, so I do not make the other person feel they need to defend their position. Next, I'll address body language communication I am seeing and ask the right questions to make sure we are on the same page. Lastly make sure that I take the empathetic approach when responding to ensure I keep myself in the position of and advisor and not a friend so I will be able to offer guidance. 

I've learned the difference in the communication styles, the advantages and challenges that each will have, and ways we can be more cognizant of how our message or point may come across to others. What I plan to do in order to apply what I've learned is take time to practice different situation. Ultimately correcting mistakes that I have a tendency to make and not letting my overconfidence get in the way of helping a student.
