Activity

There are many elements to a successful presentation during instruction. It is easy—especially for nervous presenters to develop habits that detract from their instruction. Mindfulness in your tone, movement, and eye contact yield improved results.

Intrinsic motivation is longer lasting and arguably more rewarding. Both achieve results, but motivation is lost more quickly when the extrinsic factor is taken away.

This module included practical plans for enhancing student security and autonomy. Adult students especially prefer these factors in their learning. Providing structure and setting expectations, while allowing for independence and feedback yield greater results.

Literacy is fundamental for all sectors of society—it is communication and comprehension. New literacy has expanded the domains of communication and may allow for wider literacy in the population.

The Socratic method is more important than ever in assessing understanding. Mobile literacy has brought an inundation of information. In order to comprehend information, students must vet their sources, distill information from content that may contain non sequiturs, and navigate social media.

The SIP principle is the basis for communication. However, new literacy has redefined the flow. There is no longer one sender and one recipient.

Literacy is holistic. Listening, reading, speaking, and writing are required for comprehension.

To meet the needs of adult learners we need to be flexible and competent. Even self-directed learners require support. It is in our best interest to be aware of our verbal and non-verbal cues.

Adult learners bring their own experience and expectations to the university experience. By being open minded, willing to guide but also to change my approach, I can better meet their needs. Developmental advising is about learning for both sides.

I already practice active listening, and terms like "combative listener" and the recommendation to not smile excessively are helpful.
