In my teaching area, a lot of students want to pursue this field because they think they will not have to do paper work. They come in thinking they will be able to remember anything they need to know. Our school develops their note taking skills from the first day of class, and hopefully, the students realize they cannot remember all pertinent information. your lesson plan must be paced so the slowest note taker can keep up, sometimes this means slight changes to your delivery.

I teach a class in mechanics. I use PowerPoint, printed hand-out material, lecture, demonstrations, and finally student lab. exersizes.

Since they quit teaching cursive writing in the schools,most of our younger students can not even print legibly. Writing is something imperitive for our students, they must make notes on repair orders legibly,they must sign off repair orders and they should take notes when trying to diagnose complicated repairs. Not being able to print or write legibly is an insurmountable problem in a technical field. We now have to do basic english and math skills as a part of normal class work.We teach and grade them on their paper work as well as technical prowess. They must be able to… >>>

Our students really are our customers.They are paying for the knowledge we supply. As customers they need to actively take advantage of the information offered. As Instructors, we need to treat them with respect and help them individually to make sure every student gets the information they are paying for. As customers, they are expected to follow school rules and realize grading criteria and proficiency are the same for everyone.

We use value added assessment nearly every day. As students progress through the course,we evalate their improvement in the performance of tasks they will be charged with when entering the work force.

We use objective quizes for weekly "Spot checks" of students learning levels. These tests are a mix of true/false and multiple choice questions.Out course final is subjective, essay answers to gauge students understanding of material being taught.

Formative assessment is very important. It lets you know whether or not the group needs every basic detail of an operation. If they are more experienced,they may require the main steps to achieve an objective.
Evaluation is to test them on operations required to complete the course.

We are using technology as part of a hands on course.Our students use our manufactuer based web site to gain information needed to complete an in class lab. exercise. These lab exercises are all assessment based on over all performance.
