About me

My name is Josi Phillips, and I am the new Program Manager for the Radiologic Technology program at Concorde Career Institute in Jacksonville. I have been a radiologic technologist since 1993, bringing over 33 years of experience in medical imaging to both clinical practice and education. I hold certifications in Radiography, Radiation Therapy, and MRI.

I am passionate about teaching and supporting students as they develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to succeed in the imaging profession. My hobbies include judging collegiate gymnastics and enjoying time at the beach.

I am excited to be relocating to Florida and look forward to enjoying the warm weather and beautiful beaches. I share my home with one very spoiled dog and three precious cats, and I am also a proud parent of two adult children and am happily engaged to my fiancé.

Activity

I learned that students may leave an e-learning program for several reasons, such as feeling disconnected, being overwhelmed by the workload, having competing personal responsibilities, or experiencing technical difficulties. As an online facilitator, it is important to recognize these challenges and take steps to support students. Building strong connections, maintaining clear communication, providing reasonable expectations, and helping students find technical support can all help reduce attrition and keep learners engaged in the course.

I learned that effective synchronous discussions require preparation, clear organization, and student engagement. Providing materials ahead of time helps students come prepared to contribute, while keeping groups small and sessions short helps maintain focus. I also learned that creating a welcoming environment and using tools like video conferencing can help students feel more connected and engaged during discussions.

In this course I have learned it is important to get to know my students and to individually also encourage them to connect with one another.  I have learned to also encourage face-to-face study groups when possible. In addition, I hope to start a group chat so students can stay informed, support each other, and share helpful study tools. This will help build a stronger sense of community within the class.

This module reminded me of the importance of being an effective online instructor by staying organized and prepared. It is important to know how to access the class roster, course materials, and other necessary tools before the course begins. This course also provided a helpful checklist of tasks to complete, which will help ensure that I am ready and able to support my students effectively in an online learning environment.

When giving a demonstration, it is important to make sure all students can clearly see you and are paying attention so they can fully understand the steps being shown. After students attempt the skill themselves, observe their performance to identify where some may be struggling. If needed, go over the demonstration again to help reinforce the concept and ensure everyone understands it.

After I share a little about myself, I enjoy going around the room and inviting students to introduce themselves and share whatever they feel comfortable sharing.  I especially enjoy hearing how students decided to pursue radiologic technology and what their goals are after graduation. Some may want to specialize in areas like CT or MRI, while others plan to work as radiologic technologists. I also like to learn about their “why”—what motivated them to choose this career path. Understanding their goals and motivations helps me connect with them and better support them throughout the program.

Proper planning and preparation are essential for creating a positive learning environment. I make it a priority to arrive before the students so the classroom is organized and ready for the day. Greeting each student by name as they enter helps them feel welcomed and valued. Small interactions like this help build relationships and show students that they are seen, supported, and that their presence in the classroom truly matters.

One of the most important points I took away from this was that instructors should demonstrate the same habits and expectations they want to see in their students. By arriving on time, being prepared for class, and showing genuine concern for student success, instructors set a positive example. When students see that their instructor is committed and supportive, it helps create an environment where they feel encouraged to succeed.

From this module, I have learned that helping students succeed in the online environment requires much more than simply delivering course content. I now better understand the importance of assessing both my own strengths and weaknesses as an online instructor, as well as helping students evaluate their readiness for online learning. This course highlighted that effective online instruction involves supporting students with technical skills, but also helping them develop important non-technical skills such as time management, communication, and self-motivation. I also learned how essential it is to guide students in building their online persona and understanding the expectations of online… >>>

From this module, I have learned the definition and importance of active learning and how essential it is to effective instruction. I now understand that students learn best when they are actively engaged in the learning process rather than simply listening to lectures. Creating opportunities for discussion, problem-solving, and hands-on activities helps students think critically and retain information more effectively. Moving forward, I intend to apply this by incorporating more interactive strategies into my teaching, encouraging participation, and designing lessons that involve students in their own learning. By using active learning techniques, I can help create a more engaging and… >>>
