I am concerned with cheating in an online class! There is not much you can do about students cheating on a test -- they could always open a second browser window and look up answers and no one would be the wiser. But when students present plagiarized work or purchased or copied essays -- then this is an issue I take seriously.

I allow students one chance to revise an essay I have found to be less than original. I describe the problem, direct them to appropriate sources to learn about plagiarism, paraphrasing and citing their sources, and… >>>

I agree with Bill. There are many times when we need to be able to help students with their technology problems. Just refering them to tech support is insufficient. In a class where face to face interaction is so limited, it makes the instructor's position stronger to be able to make recommendations to correct student shortcomings. in addition, we need to know how to use all of the tools we are presented with. Again, this makes students' confidence in the instructor stronger.

I do agree that the look and feel of an online class is important. I once taught a class wehere I had to write all the questions, assignments, resources in html. The classroom itself was then just a long thread of responses. So boring and confusing. I finally color-coded all of my posts and sent a key to the students so they would be able to find assignments, comments and resources, etc. Today's classrooms are much more sophisticated. The increased use of smart phones and tablets has further impacted how we access classroom material as well.

On the other hand, the internet has opened the door to widespread plagiarism.
