Charlin, great comments. I would also add that when possible, try to ask questions of the disruptive student and try to get to the root cause of their disruption. At times disruptive students are using the only technique they know to show they are confused and feel out of place in your classroom. This is not the case 100% of the time but a little time spent asking some questions can provide a wealth of information that can better allow you to understand the student and meet their needs. Arlene, failure to prepare can add to the stress levels of students and lack of preparation is not something we as instructors can really control. I do however highly recommend having a discussion with your students as to their expectations of the course if they do not properly prepare. You may find they provide feedback that will allow you to better meet their needs in the preparation process. For some students it can be as simple as no one has ever taken the time to show them how to study, how to take good notes and how to ask questions… >>>

John, glad you enjoyed the class and the additional reading on Digital Natives. Please share any of your insights and links to readings you feel others would find interesting as this is intended to be a sharing of ideas and resources. James Jackson

Brian, public speaking is higher on the list of fears than death so this is a common issue. Helping students realize it is natural to experience a nervous sensation and even we as faculty battle through our own fears can also help students become more at ease with speaking in front of a group. Danielle, what a great story and really speaks to the importance of building professional relationships with your students and building an understanding of their root issues that could be preventing them from success in the classroom. Thanks for sharing. James Jackson
Danielle, what a great accomplishment especially when measured among your peers. Such awards can also help with building trust and comfort with your students. James Jackson
Pamela, great topic and a real situation we as instructors must face. Statistics suggest the average person will hold more than 14 jobs in their life time and 3 or more careers. This is one area of motivation for students to consider and is becoming more the norm. James Jackson
Jacqueline, building a trust relationship with your students will also help with their test anxiety. Students have fewer fears with instructors they respect and trust. For some students however, the anxiety is there no matter what level of trust you build so the practice exams can be very valuable to show them they know the materials. James Jackson
Jennifer, the brain dump is a great technique as long as the student is aware of any time restraints placed on the test. What techniques do you use to help them with time management on exams with limited time? James Jackson
Phyllis, great point. We as instructors need to lead the charge of becoming life long learners. There is always something more to learn and as we evaluate each group of students we lead and educate, we need to take what works and utilize more of that while reducing and eliminating those things that do not help our students.
