About me

Anthony, I always suggest "the best seats are up front". Of course not everyone can be in front (some prefer to remain back some, or in the back). But there are less distractions, hearing and seeing is better, one on one contact is improved, and the lesson is more dynamic when received by the instructor right in front of the student. Terence, Success for most is getting a good job and making a better life for themselves anad their loved ones. We have most control over the getting a good job, but we can also influence their happiness by conveying the positive side to life; that is, being a positive role model that suggests that happiness comes from within. Barry Westling
Terence, This is so true. Dreams, hopes, observations, needs, improvements, good and bad experiences - all are among the many ways to document our thoughts about our classes and our students. Better to note them than try to remember them all. Barry Westling
Andrea, Yes, how we act and prepare is an example to our students. We have only a few chances to convey to students our level of preparation, so we need to set the standard right from the beginning. Barry Westling
Alana, Yes, communication dispels confusion and uncertainty. Barry Westling
Alana, One technique with the pretest is to assure gthe students the test is not for a grade but to assess prior knowledge. If students know there will not be a graded consequence, their anxiety level should be diminished. Another technique is to show a sample problem, show a common shortcut that always saves time, and add, "many mmath problems are just like this". That kind of encouragement can help diffuse fears of being able to tackle upcoming lessons. Finally, encouragement that reinforces you're there for them can be a helpful encouragement. Barry Westling
Louise, This sounds like a good variety of uses for media. Today's students want information in short bursts, and easy to access when they're wanting to review it. Of course, this creates some challenges for instructors who may have their own agenda. Therefore, the quest is to meet both instructor and student needs. Barry Westling
Anthony, I think when we reach a point where we can be honest and open, humble and kind, along with competence in our subject matter, we will be at a point where we can relate to the variety of individuals and situations often encountered in the classroom, especially in career schools. Barry Westling
Jessica, Boy, can't think of a more applicable field trip for this class. Often the field trip can bring new inspiration and motivation to students. Barry Westling
Tracy, Quite right! Just as instructors are responsible to provide the knowledge and skills in a course, I believe they have a responsibility to share staus, give advice and suggestions, and just be there to communicate kind and caring remarks that offer encouragement and hope for students. Even good students need and appreciate this quality time. Barry Westling
