I strongly believe that doing a regular students' survey at the end of each course helps to improve understanding of the students' needs. The surveys provide the school/instructors a better "pulse" about the students' needs and their experience in the classroom & the school, as a whole. The surveys make us more engaged in trying to make things better for our customers (students) and remind us that we can do better.

Now I know it takes 11 positive people to overcome 1 negative person. This just shows how powerful negativity is to ruin someone's day. From now on, it is nice to be always positive.

I learned that use of negative statements in a True or False questions should be avoided as it throws the students off track in understanding the statement. From now on, I will not use negative statement & will use positive statements in the test.

I agree.  It is everyone's endeavor.

student retention is very important and all school personnel should get involve with the student's life in the campus, either good or bad.

Hi Dr. Read, I was once a procrastinator during my younger years. What a relief when I started to learn prioritizing my tasks. I eventually learned to organize my priorities and able to plan ahead of time. I realized things got better and I was less stressed. It made me more efficient in completing a task or tasks in a short amount of time. I carried this on to this day. Moreover, I also learned to anticipate possible tasks and "insert" this in my "to do list" or put the word "NOTE" at the bottom of my list as a… >>>

I definitely like the analogy used (blue cheese) in laying down the basic understanding between concrete and abstract application. I, as an instructor, always bear in mind that my adult learners already have a "concrete" understanding of what they wanted to know or learn and I just expand (abstract) their understanding of that knowledge.

Using colored paper for handouts is a very practical but an effective method of making instructional materials easy to sort out by the students. It is a very good idea to use to break the "monotony" of the white paper. I will start using this. Thanks for a very nice tip.
I have had instances that a student is "locked-in" with respect to their negative attitude towards instructor, school and education, as a whole. All possible ways to encourage the student to focus on positive side failed. I agree that there are limited boundaries to this behavior - letting go of the student.
Hi Ms. Scales, Your discussion in this topic is very true-to-life class scenarios. I really like the way they were presented. You are right that instructors should conduct their class in various different ways to connect with their students. I have similar cases of students behavior and what you suggested are very applicable as I already tried some of them.
