If coaching is a two-way process that relies on collaboration, what happens if a direct report doesn't want your coaching? Perhaps they feel they can handle their learning on their own? I understand that the direct report needs to be prepared for coaching by comparing his current competencies against those required. But still, there are those that are resistant to changing their methods. Is this just a case of an unsolvable performance problem? In that case, do we just let them fail?

There is no real consequence for not turning in homework in my classes except that the student does not learn the material and may not perform well on the tests. These adults decide if they want to be responsible or not. However, to motivate them, do you think it would be a good idea to offer some type of bonus for turning in the complete work on time? Or is that just rewarding them for something they're supposed to be doing anyway?

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with students that only hear negativity? No matter what I say to this one student, she just shuts down and accuses me of putting her down. She really twists my words around. I don't have this problem with any other student. It is almost to the point where I will just not say anything so that she won't get the wrong idea. She's got plenty of potential, but her attitude is holding her back.
