I just completed the course ED112, motivation of the adult student and found, simply, that I was doing multiple thing incorrectly. I think I have been fostering an environment which was demotivating. Little things, like waiting to respond to a a wrong answer, in order to figure out a way to subtly correct the answer, without wrecking the security level of the student, has not been happening in my classroom. I don't flat call anyone out and belligerently chastise a students ability, but the subtle nuances which aid in establishing classroom security, have been faint. To use an analogy, this is… >>>

I agree that honesty is the best policy! However, I don't think there is anything wrong with havin a sense of humor about being human, either. It is important for students to see you as an approachable human being while not crossing the line. Students can interact with a computer in the library or a lab or at home. They physically attend classes to engage in a social activity. Therefore, be social, have a sense of humor, but remain professional.

I feel it is absolute that adults receive a level of independence in the classroom. For many of my students it might have been twenty years since someone told them what to do, how to do it and when to do it. I think that providing a decent level of autonomy can inadvertently induce security, which is a good practice.

Being mindful of the diversity in all classrooms seems to help in building rapport and maintaining a level of decorum within the class. I can see where the potential exists to have inadvertently made comments, taken out of context, and redefined from the perspective of the person or person of differing cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds. It is imperative to maintain a non -judgmental approach to the classroom. I think this approach helps in having the non-judgmental environment reciprocated to the instructor.

I agree that this course could help subject matter experts exponentially. First, regarding classroom instruction and relating to and devloping rapport with students. It is sometimes so difficult to realize that not all have the same information implanted in their minds and we as instructors/SME's need to be mindful of this in our dealings with the multiplicity of personalities which make up our student body. Second, SME's and instructors have an educational responsibilty to maintaining that status of expert and effective at managing classroom interactions among diverse bodies of people. I felt that the section in ED104 concerning students who are shy or angry, and how to deal with those students, was extremely beneficial. That is one example that I have never been shown before. I liked the was in which is instructed to approach these students. Listening and allowing them to diffuse their own situation was a perfect example of an intital attempt at serving customers.
