There are a number of translation programs that can be utilized to clarify what you are saying in your instructions where they translate English into the students first language.  I recommend getting them to use English as much as possible but this is a tool that can be used if they don't understand your instructions or comments.  The translation programs are free.

I have concerns that we cannot unring a bell and social networking allows information to flow outside of the classroom.  I am worried that sometimes students will post on a social networking site that will be inappropriate or destructive in nature.

@brarya0103  The thing I find most effective is immediate response in grading.  I grade papers and assignments as they come in.  For discussion boards I take off points if the postings are all on the same date, if they don't meet the early posting criteria set up for mid-week and if they don't address their fellow classmates by name when responding.

Students are no different then any other and they will rise to level of expectations you provide. about 20% of a class will do excellent work without much intervention from the instructor. About 60% will do what you expect them to do and will (like water in physics) go to the lowest energy point and due the minimum to get by if not encouraged by the instructor. About 20% will do the minimum or below the minimum no matter how much encouragement is provided. This means that effort to reach those who are willing to engage is critical. Off course… >>>
