FERPA requires strict guidelines for institutions to release student data and this has become especially relevant in the online learning platforms. I found it interesting that in a general school setting students can choose not to disclose any personal identifying information, however in an online platform that is not the case.

FERPA protects both parties involved, the student and the institution. FERPA outlines specific procedures for obtaining and disclosing student information. Students have the right to access their educational records and challenge information they deem is inaccurate during a hearing and even if they are denied the challenge they can still add a statement to their permanent record.

FERPA is used to protect the students and the institutions they attend. Knowledge of what can and cannot be disclosed and to whom can protect our students and our schools from potential privacy violations and legal actions.

FERPA is the right of all students and/or parents. FERPA allows students and guardians access to their academic records and the ability to file complaints or challenge certain aspects of their records through hearings.

Develop content that is relevant to the subject matter and engages the students. Express enthusiasm for the material and adjust it in a way that is easily presentable and understood.

Taking the time to learn students names and engaging them in activities that makes them feel comfortable helps develop a trusting relationship. Setting the standards and expectations at the beginning helps ease some anxiety about the course expectations.

Being early and prepared for a class sets you up for success and reduces the chances of confusion or frustration for your students. Keeping the classroom neat and organized and having your materials ready will allow you to focus on the core concepts of the class.

As an instructor it is my job to stay current with the content that I am teaching to my students and to further my own education to better serve the student I teach. I also learned to practice professionalism and provide feedback and constructive criticism to aide my students in their professional development.

Adult learners are more likely to take their own initiatives for studying and applying knowledge from experience, however many adult learners benefit from a structured environment where they are aware of what topics need more of their attention.

Developmental advising focuses on the student as a whole. For adult students to be successful in their educational growth they should have the opportunity to sit with a knowledgeable person and develop obtainable goals such as class schedules and costs to work around their current responsibilities and make a manageable plan for achieving their goals.
